The courthouse corridors were busy as attorneys, staff members, and visitors prepared for the morning schedule. Near one of the main courtrooms, an older Black man named Marcus Reed walked slowly through the hallway wearing simple courthouse maintenance clothing.
Marcus carried a small folder and a cleaning cloth. To anyone who did not know him, he looked like an ordinary member of the building’s support staff.
A younger courthouse administrator noticed him approaching the courtroom doors and immediately stepped into his path.
“Hey,” the employee said sharply. “Maintenance uses the service hallway.”
Marcus stopped.
“I need to go into this courtroom.”
The employee looked at his clothing and laughed dismissively.
“Not through these doors you don’t.”
Marcus raised the folder slightly.
“You might want to check who I am first.”
The administrator pointed toward the back corridor.
“I know where maintenance staff are supposed to be. Take the service entrance.”
Marcus remained calm.
“Open the folder and read the name.”
The employee pushed the folder back toward him without opening it.
“I do not need your paperwork.”
Marcus looked directly at him.
“That may be the biggest mistake you make this morning.”
The administrator became more impatient.
“Do not threaten me. Move the cart, take your things, and use the proper hallway.”
Marcus refused to move.
“Call security if you think that is necessary.”
The employee reached toward his radio.
Marcus added calmly, “Just make sure you tell them you are blocking the judge from his own courtroom.”
The administrator froze.
Before he could respond, the courtroom doors opened.
A senior clerk stepped into the hallway.
The administrator quickly pointed toward Marcus.
“Perfect. Can you tell this maintenance worker he cannot enter through here?”
The clerk stared at him.
“Maintenance worker?”
The administrator nodded.
“He keeps insisting he belongs in the courtroom.”
The clerk looked toward Marcus and then back at the employee.
“That is Judge Marcus Reed.”
The administrator’s expression changed immediately.
The clerk continued.
“Judge Reed is conducting an observation of courthouse operations before taking the bench today.”
Marcus calmly removed the cleaning gloves he had been wearing.
“Still want security?” he asked.
The employee looked embarrassed.
“Your Honor, I am sorry. I thought you were part of the maintenance staff.”
Marcus nodded.
“That is precisely why I was dressed this way.”
He explained that he had intentionally spent part of the morning observing how employees interacted with cleaners, maintenance staff, visitors, and other people who did not appear to hold senior positions.
“I wanted to understand what people experience when nobody thinks a judge is watching,” Marcus said.
The administrator attempted to explain that he had been trying to control access to the courtroom.
Marcus acknowledged that maintaining secure access was part of the employee’s responsibilities.
“You should control access,” he said. “But you should also look at identification when someone offers it.”
He held up the folder the administrator had refused to open.
Inside were his courthouse credentials and the morning schedule.
Marcus instructed the employee to report the interaction to his supervisor so it could be formally reviewed.
He did not immediately demand that the employee lose his job. Instead, he emphasized training, accountability, and consistent treatment.
“The next person walking through this hallway may actually be a cleaner,” Marcus said. “That does not make them less deserving of professionalism.”
The administrator apologized again.
Marcus then entered the courtroom and prepared to begin the day’s proceedings.
The incident left a lasting impression on several staff members who had witnessed it.
Courthouses exist to make careful decisions based on evidence. The same principle applies outside the courtroom doors.
Clothing can suggest a job, but it cannot define a person’s value. Asking a question and checking identification takes only moments. Making an assumption can create consequences that last much longer.
