Courthouse Employee Tried to Remove an Elderly Janitor—Then They Realized He Was not a Janitor

The federal courthouse was already alive with activity early that morning. Attorneys hurried through the marble hallways carrying stacks of legal files, deputies escorted visitors through security, and court employees prepared for another full schedule of hearings.

Near one of the main courtrooms, an elderly Black man wearing simple maintenance clothes slowly pushed a janitor’s cart filled with cleaning supplies. He worked quietly, making sure the hallway was spotless before the first cases began.

Most people walked past without paying much attention.

As the man approached the entrance to one of the courthouse’s largest courtrooms, a courthouse employee noticed him and quickly walked over.

“Hey!” the employee called out loudly. “Where do you think you’re going with that cart?”

The elderly man stopped.

“Inside,” he replied calmly. “I need to prepare the courtroom.”

The employee immediately stepped in front of the doorway.

“Not this courtroom,” he said. “This room is reserved for an important hearing.”

The older man remained polite.

“I understand,” he answered. “I’m expected inside.”

The employee shook his head.

“No, you’re not.”

Several lawyers slowed their pace after hearing the raised voices.

The elderly man explained that the courtroom was waiting for him.

Instead of listening, the employee grabbed the handle of the janitor’s cart and pulled it backward.

“Take this somewhere else,” he said firmly. “You’re delaying everyone.”

The older man calmly placed one hand back on the cart.

“Please let go,” he said. “You’re creating a problem that doesn’t need to exist.”

The employee crossed his arms.

“The only problem is that you refuse to listen.”

He reached for his radio.

“I’ll call courthouse security if I have to.”

“Go ahead,” the older man replied.

Within moments, deputies and several courthouse administrators arrived in the hallway after hearing the commotion.

Before anyone could explain what had happened, the chief clerk stepped through the courtroom doors.

She looked toward the elderly man and immediately smiled.

“Good morning, Judge Williams,” she said. “Everyone is waiting for you.”

The hallway became completely silent.

The courthouse employee stared in disbelief.

The elderly man quietly removed a lightweight maintenance jacket he had been wearing over his suit.

Underneath was a neatly tailored judicial robe.

The employee’s face immediately changed.

“Judge… I… I didn’t realize…”

Judge Williams nodded calmly.

“No,” he replied. “You didn’t.”

The chief clerk explained that Judge Williams often arrived early before important hearings. Rather than announcing himself, he preferred walking through the courthouse to observe how employees treated people they believed had no authority.

The judge looked around the hallway where lawyers, deputies, and visitors had quietly gathered.

“Today,” he said, “I wasn’t evaluating the courtroom.”

He paused.

“I was evaluating professionalism.”

The employee lowered his head.

“I’m sorry, Your Honor.”

Judge Williams accepted the apology but continued speaking.

“A courthouse exists to ensure fairness,” he said. “That responsibility doesn’t begin when a judge enters the courtroom. It begins the moment someone walks through these doors.”

He explained that every visitor, employee, witness, attorney, and member of the public deserves to be treated respectfully before assumptions are made.

The chief administrator informed the employee that the incident would be reviewed according to courthouse workplace standards and additional customer-service training would be scheduled.

Judge Williams thanked everyone for their patience before turning toward the courtroom.

As the large wooden doors opened, he looked back one final time.

“Respect isn’t reserved for people with titles,” he said. “It’s the standard everyone deserves.”

The hallway remained quiet as he entered the courtroom and prepared to begin the day’s proceedings.

Those who witnessed the exchange remembered the unexpected reveal, but the lesson stayed with them even longer.

Professionalism is measured not by how we treat important people after we recognize them, but by how we treat every person before we know who they are.
