The elderly man sat in the corner booth with a cup of black coffee and an unopened newspaper. His jacket was worn, but the waitress had greeted him warmly.
Another customer crossed the diner and stopped beside his table.
“You need to leave,” he said. “This place is not for you.”
The older man lifted his cup. “I’m only finishing my coffee.”
The customer raised his voice, criticizing the man’s clothes and pointing toward the exit. Conversations stopped as people turned from the counter to watch.
“I said get out! You do not belong here.”
A waitress hurried over and stood between them.
“Enough. Step away from him.”
The customer demanded that she remove the elderly man instead. The waitress looked at the quiet guest more carefully.
“Sir, you said your name was?”
He answered, and recognition crossed her face.
“You just ordered the owner of this diner to leave,” she announced. “He built this place from an empty storefront and served the first meal himself.”
The customer stared at the man. “The owner?”
The elderly man nodded. “I built it from nothing, but I built it so everyone could feel welcome.”
The waitress pointed toward the door. “You demanded that he leave because of his appearance. Now you are the one leaving.”
The diner returned to a peaceful silence.
